A K-Beauty Guide to Double Cleansing

A K-Beauty Guide to Double Cleansing

Although double cleansing has become a staple practice in the Western beauty world over recent years, it is actually a technique that has been at the heart of Korean (and Japanese) skincare routines for centuries.

What is double cleansing?
Dating back to the 14th century, double cleansing was deeply ingrained in Korean skincare philosophy and was further popularised internationally by the trending ‘10-step skincare routine’. The method involves using an oil-based cleanser first to remove makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum (oil), followed by a water-based formula to deeply cleanse the skin of impurities. While this approach may sound intensive, Korean skincare prioritises skin health and hydration, so cleansers are formulated to be gentle and non-stripping. Here are our favourites for each step…

Perfect for your first cleanse
The purpose of your first cleanse is to remove the day, which is why oil-rich formulas are preferred – oil attracts oil! These cleansers bind to oil-based impurities and products, along with any excess sebum on your face, and make light work of makeup removal.

Contrary to common belief, oils and balms can be a great choice for oilier skin types due to their oil-attracting properties. Just be sure to avoid those formulated without surfactants (cleansing agents), as they could worsen oiliness!

Not keen on oils and balms? Fret not. Try a cleansing water instead (also known as micellar water). Cleansing waters use ‘micelles’ – hence the name – to lift away impurities, makeup and oil from the skin and are applied with a cotton pad. They’re also handy when you’re on the go and don’t have easy access to water – add one to your festival packing list for next summer!

Perfect for your second cleanse
Traditionally, the second cleanse is either a water-based gel or foam and this step is designed to deeply cleanse your pores and prepare your skin for the rest of your routine.

Historically, foams have had a bad rep due to the drying surfactant, SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate). However, formulation has advanced over the years and modern formulas often use gentler surfactants and barrier-supporting ingredients to prevent irritation and dehydration.

Expert tip: Your skin should never feel tight or ‘squeaky clean’ after cleansing. This is a sign that the cleanser you are using isn’t suitable for your skin and has stripped it of its natural oils. Your skin should feel comfortable and fresh, not screaming out for moisture!

Cleansing Dos and Don’ts:

  • Do double cleanse at night when wearing makeup and/or sunscreen.
  • Don’t double cleanse in the morning (unless you slept in your makeup!).
  • Do rinse thoroughly. A flannel can help ensure every trace is removed.
  • Don’t use hot water. Stick to lukewarm/tepid to avoid compromising your skin barrier.
  • Do be aware of how your skin feels post-cleanse. It should feel balanced and comfortable, not tight or squeaky clean!
  • Don’t reuse the same flannel every day. Use a new, clean flannel daily.
  • Do pay special attention to the hairline and jaw – these areas often get missed and can lead to congestion.
