SPF QUESTIONS
SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor”. It’s a measure of how much protection a sunscreen product can offer your skin to help protect it from the harmful effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays.
SPF (sunscreen) should be worn every day, even when it’s cloudy or when you're indoors. UV rays from the sun can penetrate through windows and clouds, potentially damaging skin by premature ageing, pigmentation, and an increased risk of skin cancer.
It is recommended to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and to apply it generously to all exposed skin, including the face, neck, and hands.
It's also important to reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming or sweating, as the protection can wear off over time.
Alongside sunscreen, you can also look to protect your skin by seeking shade during peak sun hours, wearing protective clothing, such as a wide-brimmed hat and long-sleeved shirts, and using sunglasses to protect your eyes.
Yes, should be worn every day, even when it’s cloudy or when you're indoors. UV rays from the sun can penetrate through windows and clouds, potentially damaging skin via premature ageing, pigmentation, and an increased risk of skin cancer.
This is an example of a response that you might give. It's good to be as thorough as possible in responses as that has a tendency to improve trust overall.
Broad-spectrum SPF refers to a type of sunscreen which helps to protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
UVA rays have longer wavelengths and can penetrate deeper into the skin, causing long-term damage such as premature ageing and an increased risk of skin cancer. UVB rays have shorter wavelengths and are the main cause of sunburns.
A broad-spectrum sunscreen is designed to protect against both types of rays, providing more complete protection against the sun's harmful effects. When choosing a sunscreen, it is important to look for one that is labeled as broad-spectrum and has an SPF of at least 30 to ensure that you are getting adequate protection.
Chemical sunscreens (or organic sunscreens) absorb UV rays using active ingredients like avobenzone and octinoxate, and then convert them into heat.
Mineral sunscreens (or physical sunscreens) use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to physically block UV rays from penetrating the skin. Our Sun Safe Face + Body Mineral SPF50 is a great, lightweight option to try
Sunscreen technology has come a long way from the days of chalky white residues left from SPF. That said, many mineral SPF’s may still leave a white cast. Our Sun Safe Face + Body Mineral SPF50 is a lightweight lotion, which sinks in effortlessly without a trace of white.
Yes, a higher SPF offers more protection. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%. However, no sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays. It’s our recommendation to use an array of methods to protect yourself from the sun, including protective clothing and hats, and avoiding midday exposure when the sun is most intense.
Using sunscreen may slightly reduce vitamin D production, but you can still get enough vitamin D through limited sun exposure, diet, and supplements if needed. Always consult your doctor for individual advice.
Apply sunscreen as the last step in your morning skincare routine, after moisturiser and before makeup.
Always ensure you are applying sunscreen to dry skin, to ensure the consistency of the SPF is not affected.
Applying sunscreen as the last step in your skincare routine ensures that it provides the necessary protection against UV rays, helping to prevent sun damage and maintain healthy skin.
We recommend applying a minimum of two full finger lengths of SPF to your face, neck, and any other exposed areas of skin in the morning, before exposure to the sun. It is also advisable to reapply throughout the day, either with a lotion format, or using sun stick or mist to help apply over make-up. Our Silky Calming Sun Stick SPF50+ is designed to glide over skin or make-up, to offer easy reapplication on the go.
No sun creams are truly waterproof. They can be water-resistant for 40 to 80 minutes, but you'll need to reapply after swimming or sweating.
"Reef-safe sunscreen" is not a standardised term from a recognised governing body, but it is generally used to identify sunscreens that do not contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, two commonly used UV-blocking filters.
If you are looking for an SPF without oxybenzone and octinoxate, you could consider these SPF’s from our range:
Thank You Farmer Sun Project Skin Relief SPF50+ PA++++ (uses a variety of chemical & mineral filters)
Thank You Farmer Safe Sun Fluid Age 0880 SPF 50+ PA++++ (uses a mineral filter only - Titanium Dioxide)
The potential issue with some moisturisers or foundation containing SPF, is that you may need to apply a large amount of product in order to achieve the stated SPF factor.
Our Thank You Farmer SPF’s have been designed to offer broad-spectrum sun protection, but also offer additional skincare benefits such as additional hydration or oil control.
Our recommendation would be to use a product which is primarily an SPF, and look for one with additional hydrating benefits - such as our best-selling Sun Project Water Sun Cream SPF50+ PA+++
SPF can sometimes cause acne, especially if it contains heavy or pore-clogging ingredients. To avoid this, choose non-comedogenic, oil-free SPF products designed for acne-prone skin. Our Sun Project Skin Relief Sun Cream SPF50+ PA++++ has been clinically proven to reduce skin oiliness, and the appearance & occurrence of acne.
SPF works by absorbing, reflecting, or scattering UV radiation to protect the skin from sunburn and long-term damage. The SPF number indicates how much longer skin takes to burn with the product compared to without it.
There are 2 types of sunscreens, and they work slightly differently:
Chemical sunscreens (or organic sunscreens) absorb UV rays using active ingredients like avobenzone and octinoxate, and then convert them into heat.
Mineral sunscreens (or physical sunscreens) use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to physically block UV rays from penetrating the skin.
A minimum of SPF 30 is recommended, but we would usually recommend SPF 50 for increased protection.
Yes, SPF is safe to use when pregnant. Opt for mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as they are less likely to cause skin irritation and are considered safer. Always consult your doctor for individual advice.
SPF is important because it protects your skin from harmful UV rays, reducing the risk of sunburn, premature ageing, and skin cancer.
SPF is essential after retinol because retinol increases skin sensitivity to the sun, making it more prone to sunburn and damage. Using SPF helps protect your skin from these harmful effects.
SPF 50 significantly reduces tanning by blocking most UV rays, but it doesn't prevent it entirely. Some UV exposure can still cause minimal tanning, and individual skin types will respond differently. Whilst a “glowy tan” is often celebrated, tanning is actually a sign of skin damage. Tanning damages your skin cells and speeds up visible signs of aging, and may lead to the development of skin cancer.
